Job description

First Lady, the industry leader in Chicago tours and private events, is looking for a skilled individual to work in our engineering department. Serving Chicago for over 80 years, our company has grown to include nine vessels operating every March - November from our dock at the Southeast corner of the Michigan Avenue Bridge. Candidates should possess handyman/mechanical skills, be able to work well with others, and possess basic customer service professionalism. Candidates should have a flexible schedule and be available to work weekends during our cruising season. Must have reliable transportation as the position varies between our dockside location in downtown Chicago and our shipyard location In the southwest suburbs. Position is full time, year round with an insurance package available after 90 days of employment. Below is a more detailed description of essential job functions and requirements.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS- the following are essential functions of the job but are not all-inclusive.

  • Carry out and complete tasks as assigned.

  • Perform daily boat checks including engine fluid levels and engine condition, battery checks, propulsion and electrical system checks

  • Troubleshoot and repair problems reported by Captain

  • Check and repair plumbing system, including toilets, sinks and bar equipment

  • Monitor passenger & crew member safety issues on the boat. Ensure that safety equipment is utilized and appropriate guidelines are followed for all tasks involving physical risk or hazardous materials

  • Miscellaneous light carpentry, electrical and fabrication

  • Participate in meetings, training, drills

  • Perform cleaning tasks of the vessels and property as required

  • Assist Chief Engineer and First Assistant in adjusting, repairing and overhauling machinery.

  • Maintain personal uniform standards.

  • Understand and adhere to the contents of the Employee Handbook.

  • Carry out other duties as assigned by the vessel Master.

Wage

  • $25-$36 per hour

Job requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to understand/troubleshoot systems, read schematics and operate hand tools

  • Must be a minimum of 21 years of age

  • Must wear Company uniform and required safety equipment

  • Submit to and pass alcohol and drug tests as mandated by the US Coast Guard including but not limited to pre-employment, random, and post-accident testing

  • Maintain compliance with USCG licensing requirements including physical standards

  • Submit to and pass criminal, employment, and education background screening

  • Red Cross First Aid and CPR

  • TWIC Card

CERTIFICATIONS & EDUCATION

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Mental- Ability to determine safe or unsafe conditions. Process calculations occasionally.

  • Use of Senses- Observe for safety. Vision correctable to 20/40. Full color vision, full range of all limbs

  • Environment- Outside conditions, extreme temperatures. Marine operation subject to varied wake and motion.

  • Physical- Ability to carry materials weighing upwards of 75 lbs. to include hoses, garbage, paint and other. Ability to work on scaffold and ladders. Continuous speaking, hearing, seeing, depth perception, and color vision. Frequent standing, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching and handling.. Occasional sitting, climbing and crawling in tight engine rooms and spaces.
